Submission Guidelines

Notice: Prior to submission of any work, please read the Disclaimer & Privacy Policy for important information regarding this publication.
Please read the following guidelines carefully since failure to observe them may result in the automatic rejection of your material.
General Guidelines

Except for featured authors and artists, we only accept electronic submissions of previously unpublished work.

We accept simultaneous submissions. If the manuscript is accepted elsewhere, we require immediate notification.

Send your work as an attachment. Do not submit your work in the body of your e-mail. Do not submit your material using file compression (e.g., *.zip, etc.)

We will respond to your submission via the e-mail address you use to submit your work. Please be aware that we will make no attempts to contact you via phone or snail-mail, so use an e-mail address that will remain active. If we like your work and cannot contact you, we assume the right to publish your submission.

Please make sure your submissions are in a Microsoft Word Format (*.doc) or a Rich Text File (*.rtf). Any digital artwork or photography needs to be sent in standard image extension (*.gif or *.jpg). Higher resolutions will be adjusted to 72 dpi.

The Editorial Staff reserves the right to make minor grammatical and punctuation corrections to submissions.
Please submit the following information when submitting (even if you have previously submitted material):

The author's full name and e-mail address should appear both in the body of the e-mail message.

The submission genre(s),( i.e. fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.), in the e-mail subject line.
Biographical Information
- In the body of the e-mail by which you attach your work, please provide a short biography of around 50 words (written in the third person).
Poetry Submissions

Any type of poetry is accepted with no restrictions on form or content.

Only 3 to 5 pages of poetry, with one poem on each page, are normally accepted per person during each publishing period.
Fiction Submissions
We accept short stories of all types and genres.
- The short story should be between 500 words (2 pages) and 2500 words (10 pages) in length. Only one work of fiction is normally accepted per person during one publishing period.
- AR does not accept novelizations or novel excerpts. At editorial board's discretion novel excerpts may be published in conjunction with "Featured Autors" or "Spotlight On..." authors.
Non-Fiction/Creative Non-Fiction Submissions
Interviews, reviews and column ideas are invited. Query or offer suggestions via e-mail.

Works of non-fiction/creative non-fiction should be between 500 words (2 pages) and 2500 words (10 pages) in length—and may be an excerpt of a longer work. Essays, Autobiography, and Memoir excerpts are considered.

Only one non-fiction submission is normally accepted per person during one publishing period.

Scholarly articles/essays should use current MLA documentation guidelines for source citation and paper formatting.
Art & Photography
Please note that art and photography may be reduced in resolution and/or size to better fit the format of this literary journal.
3-5 digital art and photography submissions should be in standard .GIF or JPG format at 72 dpi resolution.
The Aroostook Review welcomes art and photography based on the following restrictions:

Pornographic or offensive art and photography will not be accepted.

Art and photography that are derivative work based on other copyrighted works will not be accpeted.

Art or photography with your own embedded copyright notice, watermark, or a timestamp will not be accepted.

Series of several identical artwork or photographs. Select the best one and submit it. Otherwise, such works will not be accepted

Casual art or photography submissions (e.g., vacation snapshots, family portraits, etc.) which do not have a clear artistic intent will not be accepted.
Publication & Copyright

The Aroostook Review currently publishes an annual issue every summer. Please note that The Aroostook Review is a non-paying publication. If published, contributors will not receive payment from The Aroostook Review.

Response time is typically 6-8 months from the published submission deadline for the annual issue. Submissions are not reviewed during the summer.

The Aroostook Review acquires First Non-exclusive Internet Rights for a one (1) year period which corresponds with the duration of the current annual issue in which your work appears. All other rights revert to the author. Authors may contact the editorial staff of The Aroostook Review with any questions regarding these rights. All published work will be archived online.

Should your work appear elsewhere, The Aroostook Review requests acknowledgement as the original publisher. Linkbacks are alway welcome.
How to Submit
