Sometimes you need to be bitten to be loved
Sometimes you need to have a crooked eye to be beautiful
Sometimes you need the time to stay inside
Sometimes you need to move ahead despite the sun
Perhaps all you need to do is sigh alone
and let the dirty people pass you by
Perhaps you need to leave a bowl outside
and let the weather collect itself
I’ve had to learn to love the ugly things
to be able to appreciate their beauty
A cloudy day
A wet clothes-line
A placid flag
An insect's eternal struggle
I’ve had to insult people
to be able to know I am wrong
I’ve had to see disappointment
to know how I should move
I’ve had to experience all of this
to realize I’ve seen nothing.

"Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest
places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find
not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination, and
of the heart." ---Salman Rushdie
