A Soul in Hell
“I was not there for the ashes,
I had been there only for the fire”
-- Sharon Olds
You dumped the bag.
Over me
and my bed.
And I had to cover my eyes.
In disgust.
The smell was so familiar.
I knew that dust
was your skin.
And you smiled.
We were even now.
That I was buried.
In the burned blanket
of my sin.
